Askari Miniatures has filled a much needed gap in 28mm Colonial German wargaming with the release this March of four sets of Mounted Schutztruppen - horses and camels. They are the same excellent quality as previous releases of Schutztruppen in this scale, which run closer to 26mm than true 28mm but still work with the larger scale. The sets includes six troopers on either horses or camels, and a 3 person command pack with bugler, NCO and officer for each time of mounted troops. One interesting feature is the ability to include rifles either in their scabbards or withdrawn.
I plan to pick up several of these sets. Mounted officers are very rare in this scale from any current manufacturer, as indeed are mounted troops. The camel riders will only be used in the final expedition of the Nama War in 1908, though they were around in SWA afterwards.

Lead Pile Status
I've been a tad distracted by significant life events and have not been able to paint up more of my backlog of miniatures for a month or two, but that should change soon. I have a couple dozen Herero foot from various manufacturers (Perry, Askari, Foundry, Northstar) primed and ready to go, and I'm excited to move on to some of the German field artillery, Landungskorps and Seebataillon (and a few more scenics, including some unusual African wildlife).
On the other hand, I now have my very own copy of Dr. Roy Jones and Eric Alvarado's much anticipated Herero War Scenario and Rules Book and have been trying to restrain myself from reading it cover to cover (in case I wish to play any of these myself without knowing the other side's information). It is a labor of love and an outstanding contribution both to this hobby and to the history of the period (some of it only available in English translation through Dr. Jones' good efforts). I am also grateful for the kind mention made of this blog more than once within their book.
The Jones/Alvarado book is based on the venerable The Sword and The Flame rules and expansions by Greenfield Hobby, also no longer in print. Various editions pop up for sale from time to time and as I am unfamiliar with this game system I'm in the market for the 20th edition TSATF rules, or barring that the 1994 3rd edition. I believe the Herero War rules are playable without an edition of TSATF for reference, but for someone just starting out it may prove very useful to have on hand.
I have no pressing deadline by which I need to finish painting up all the figures required for these scenarios, but I would like to start playing them this year and so I may decide to give priority to completing the orbat for some of the smaller encounters so I can take the rules out for a spin. That could mean that some figures, like Herero mounted troops (some of which I still need to acquire in appropriate 28mm scale), will be deferred while others (Herero infiltrators and shock troops, German artillery and sailors) move ahead in the queue.
I've decided that I really like the old German colonial line of figures that sadly are no longer produced by the Honorable Lead Boiler Suit Company for my Schutztruppen, and have been adding them piecemeal to my lead pile whenever I am fortunate to find them available secondhand. Last December I got in an international bidding war on eBay and watched three excellent sets (not especially well painted, each of 6 to 11 figures) slip through my grasp, but I did manage to get in under the wire and purchase 11 of the Schutztruppe figures (all since repainted) for a very steep price. Yesterday I won three unopened packs with 10 of these same figures for half what they originally sold for ($10.50). If I get enough of these, I will paint some as Hereros in captured uniforms.

First Batch Painted Dismounted DSWA Schutztruppen 25mm - 30mm
Dismounted DSWA Schutztruppe Miniatures, 25mm - 28mm Figures, Various Manufacturers
Officer and men, Honourable Lead Boilersuit Company (HLBS), 28mm
Brigade Games, Great War in Africa, Germans in Slouch Hats
Foundry, Big Game Hunter 28mm
Pulp Miniatures make lively and robust 28mm German colonial figures, both Schutztruppe and Seebataillon, and though they too lack the ammunition belts and harness that were issued in Southwest Africa, they are wonderfully detailed , very clean sculpts. I painted up two in Südwester hats and one marine in a feldcap as if he were in the Schutztruppe. I worked very hard to get all the detail painted correctly on his hat, including the blue piping around the crown of the hat and a leather chin strap above the visor. It took me longer to finish painting these than the

Tiger miniatures produce Schutztruppe figures that are larger than the 28mm offerings from other manufacturers, with some approaching 30mm scale. The one I painted up, an officer in a double breasted greatcoat, shown here with a Tiger mounted Schutztruppe figure that was discussed in the previous post. The officer on foot came with a five figure artillery crew, and when he is placed next to smaller figures such as those produced by Old Glory, Askari, or the diminutive

Old Glory makes a 4 figure German Maxim gun set that they call their Spanish Fantasy Pack (SAW-26). It took a while for them to get my order straight but once I received the right set I painted up the officer as if he were wearing the brownish "kord waffenrock" piped in blue with blue cuffs and collar and silver

Askari Miniatures produced these wonderful 25mm figures, below, as part of a four piece Schutztruppe command set released last October. I am very pleased to have been able to paint the cord and tastle around the bugle on the musician's back in the imperial colors, and the blue and white "swallows nest" on each shoulder. The tip of the rifle snapped off, unfortunately, but I am still delighted with how the figure turned out. The officer with the drawn sword makes a nice change from the many others with binoculars. Askari are closer to 26mm in scale, a bit small along side the 28mm but still usable with them.

Matchlock Miniatures produces most (but not all) of the German Colonial figures originally sculpted by Falcon. As Falcon has been unresponsive to my efforts to contact them, I have made two purchases from Matchbox, ordering single figures in each pose. They are very small, a true 25mm, and will not look right next to those that are 28mm or larger. Most are sculpted as if wearing the corduroy waffenrock uniform, and they include some unusual figures such as these walking wounded. My plan is to use a small number of these dismounted figures on my table, and perhaps to paint some of them as Hereros in captured uniforms (though the scale issue will be a factor there as well).
Matchlock/Falcon Miniatures, 25mm
I painted all of these figures in a mix of Vallejo Acrylics. The khaki is largely German Camouflage Orange Ochre 128 with lighter and darker shades created by adding either Dark Sand or Ochre Brown. I used a range of blues and grays to get the hat and trim colors, and the leather is a base of Cavalry Brown with a touch of Light Rust and New Wood. I also used English Uniform and Tan Yellow, as the khaki and corduroy were often mixed even in the same unit and faded to a range of shades.
I am still working on how best to add highlights and shading to faces, as was done with the HLBS figures, above, and how much I want to outline edges in a darker color to make things like chevrons and marksman's cords stand out. I still have not solved the problem of how to make the shoulder straps in this scale look like they are comprised of 4 cords woven in imperial colors. Still, I feel good about what I've managed to do thus far. Next up, Native Auxiliaries (Witboois)! Meanwhile, here is the vanguard of the Schutztruppe to take its curtain call.

First Batch of Painted, Mounted Schutztruppen (25mm - 30mm)
DSWA Schutztruppen on Horseback, Various Manufacturers
Mounted Rider with Slung Rifle (Matchlock 25mm)
This still presents a challenge, as there are only a few sources for mounted Schutztruppen in 25mm or 28mm scale, and one of the best - those from the Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company - are no longer in production.
Nevertheless, I managed to find 10 HLBS mounted figures, including an officer, NCO and eight riders, in an unpainted condition on eBay. They are 28mm scale, came from a seller in France and were a steal - not always the case. I have painted one of the HLBS riders up in a test batch of 4 mounted figures, one from each manufacture. The results are here before you.
The single rider, above, is from Matchlock
HLBS, left and Tiger Miniatures, right: 28mm
The last figure, below, is a German officer from the Old Glory Boxer Rebellion range that came in the Great Powers High Command set of six mounted figures representing the various powers that fought in China in 1900. It is a hefty 25mm scale that works with 28mm figures. He required a little bit of putty to fill in a gap in the brim of his Südwester hat but is one of only a couple of options for mounted German commanders available that will work for this period and his horse is suitably spirited.
Old Glory German High Command Figure (Boxer range, 25mm)
Alternate View, Old Glory German Commander
No manufacture of mounted Schutztruppen thus far has sculpted horses with proper tack and associated accoutrements, including the bucket holders for the rifles that were attached to the saddle in front of the rider's right leg. There is a good possibility, though, that Askari Miniatures will produce mounted Germans this year. They are closer to 26mm in size, but beggars cannot be choosers and I am sure will be as admirably detailed as their dismounted compatriots.

First Batch of Painted and Based Herero Figures
Mix of figures from Perry, Black Tree, Foundry. North Star, Askari and Empress
I decided to paint up examples of each of the figures I am using to represent the Herero during the German-Herero War of 1904. They range from Empress and Askari, which are closer to 25mm, all the way up to Tiger which approaches 30mm. I am using Vallejo paint and have given them simple bases. One or two of them were actually cast as boers but make excellent Hereros in European clothing. I'll describe the process further in subsequent posts, but for now, here they are to enjoy.

Mustering the Troops: Germans and Allies
The lead pile at my house representing the German colonial forces in the Herero War of 1904 is even larger than the one discussed in a prior post for their Herero adversaries. This is due, in part, to a greater variety of troops in the field, as well as more options for depicting them than are available representing armed Africans in European clothing and appropriate uniforms for this period. The Order of Battle for the Germans, as of now, includes the following figures and sets:
Askari Miniatures – 4 German Shutztruppe command
- 10 German Shutztruppe infantry
- 4 German Shutztruppe field artillery crew
- Krupp 77mm field gun
- 4 German shutztruppe mountain artillery crew
Krupp 75 mm mountain gun
- 4 mules
- limber
Tiger Miniatures – 5 German Shutztruppen advancing at trail
- 5 German Shutztruppen advancing at high port
- 5 German Gun Crew in Slouch Hats
- 75mm Krupp Mountain Gun (EX-13)
- 75mm Krupp Field Gun (EX-010)
- 2 German Camel riders in Slouch Hats (sans camels)
on horses from a set with riders in pith helmets
Pulp Miniatures - 5 German Colonial officers and NCOs
- 5 German Colonial Rifles
- 4 German Hvy and Lht. Maxim Gun teams
- 5 German Seebattalion troops in field caps (to be painted as Schutztruppen)
Matchlock - 1 German S.W. Africa Field Force Wounded
(in transit) -1 German S.W. Africa Field Force Mounted Officer
- 2 German S.W. Africa Field Force Mounted Rifleman
-2 GERMAN S.W. AFRICA FIELD FORCE TWO WALKING WOUNDED
-1 GERMAN S.W. AFRICA FIELD FORCE SITTING WOUNDED)
Brigade Games - 4 (2) German Shutztruppe Command
- (4 German sailor command
- 8 German sailors I
-8 German sailors II
- 3 Hvy Maxim gun sailor crew
Northstar Miniatures – 2 Boer wagon driver and voorloper
- 4oxen
4Ground - Boer Jawbone wagon
Copplestone Castings:- 2(5) German officers
-10 German marines
Foundry - 3 Native Horse (DA 15/6)
Total: 46 infantry, 5 mounted cavalry, 3 native horse, 7 machine gunners (3 of them sailors), 13 artillery, 2 noncombatants, 11 marines, 20 sailors = 107
Comments: Some of these sets came with figures in sun helmets or fez that are not appropriate for Southwest Africa. I have not yet seen the Matchlock figures, which I believe are the same as Falcon miniatures in the US but seem to have a different selection that does not completely overlap. I understand from a personal communication with Roy Jones, a longtime champion of tabletop wargaming in this period and the author of the excellent Herero Wars blog, that a number of the Falcon miniatures offerings were designed to fill needed gaps and he recommends them highly.
I continue to hope that German figures will be produced in kord waffenrock or kord litewka uniforms, some of them in field caps. I also would like to see a heliograph unit, and if one does not appear soon, I may be compelled to decapitate the excellent set from Perry's Sudan range and replace the heads with Germans in slouch hats. More mounted troops, and better choices for native auxiliaries, are also needed. If a German personality set is contemplated by any manufacturer for this period, my votes would go for Maj Estorff in his short beard and long mustaches, Governor Leutwein in his gray home uniform and field cap, Maj. von Glasenapp of the Seebataillon in a field cap, and Lt. General Lothar von Trotha as he appears in an historic photograph taken in Windhoek with Leutwein in 1904. Herero and Nama command figures are also needed (Samuel Maharero, Hendrick Witbooi, Assa Riarua and Jakob Morenga would be my choices).

Mustering the Troops: Hereros
There is a very large lead pile now at my house, and four more shipments expected soon to fill up the ranks. I discussed options for Herero figures in a previous post. Here, then, is the current, unpainted Order of Battle for my Herero forces in either 25mm or 28mm scale:.
Askari Miniatures – 10 Hereros skirmishing
Tiger Miniatures – 5 Hereros skirmishing
Northstar Miniatures – 4 Matabele warriors firing rifles
- 8 Matabele Rebels firing muskets
- 8 Matabele Rebels firing rifles
- Native Cattle
Brigade Games – 8 Shutztruppe askaris in slouch hats
Foundry – 7 tribal musketmen in hats and coats
- 8 African villagers
Perry (Mafeking) - 6 Black armed civilians firing, standing and
standing ready
-6 Black armed civilians (mostly separate weapons)
Redoubt (in transit) - 1 NNC Kneeling Firing Carbine In Jacket
-1 Mounted Edendale Horse, NNH Contingent,
Boot Holding Carbine
- Small Native Pony For NNH Figures
-1 Sikali Horse Native On Foot Firing Carbine
Empress Miniatures -2 Native Horse mounted (head variation)
(in transit) -2 Native Horse mounted (head variation
-1 Native Horse horse holder and horses (4)
- 4 Native Horse skirmishing
Total: 62 infantry, 5 mounted / 7 dismounted cavalry, 8 noncombatants, 3 cattle
Comments: The Foundry tribal musketmen set (DA038) arrived with 7 figures instead of the listed 8. The Empress native horse sets (ZWB 44, 45, 46 & 47) will stand in nicely either as Herero or Nama cavalry, but will need to have the spears removed from the quivers that are slung across their backs. I gave the Foundry 3 rider Natal Native Horse set to the Germans to serve as native auxiliaries from the Witbooi Nama. I will continue to add figures from Askari Miniatures to my Herero forces as they are produced.
I will share the German Colonial figures in my army in a subsequent post.
